Abstract: We present a version of the orthogonality relations
for group characters which appears
to be new - at least in this generality. The
proof given uses only Maschke's theorem and
Schur's lemma. Among other consequences,
Burnside's result on the existence of zeros for
non-linear irreducible characters is generalized.
